Godfrey's blog: a radical look into life
Welcome to the edges of my mind, where I offer you a powerful response to the deep crisis of the 21st Century. A response that you, too, can share, perhaps. Provided you become willing to feel deeply enough to encounter the empowering fullness of your own Nature. Within this encounter you will find the roots of a
Radical Ecology,
an orientation and an inclination: to give rather than take, share rather than accumulate, trust rather than doubt:
to generosity and solidarity
rather than self-clinging and isolation.

Nature rules, ok?

It is a long time that human beings have been running away from Nature. It is a long time that we have been running away from ourself. We are nature. This is a fact we can never escape: no matter how many billions we pump into space travel. We can, as some have, insulate ourselves from Nature. We cannot isolate ourselves from her checks and balances. They do, and they will, always, exert themselves upon our lives, no matter how inventive our technologies.

These checks and balances have been fine tuned in their open-ended adaptability over millions, billions of years. Flash fires, tornadoes, tsunamis and droughts are not mistakes. They are not coding errors. They are an expression of Nature's checks and balances. They are output to input: especially human output.

We have been dumping on Nature for only a few hundred years. That is a very short span of time. Yet it has been enough, more than enough, to demand this kind of 'extreme' response. Yet even as we have been dumping our 'toxic' waste into our environment, we have been ingesting an ever more toxic environment into our own bodies: willingly, though hardly knowingly. We have nowhere else to get our input from. Nature is our only world, our only source of sustenance.

While we return her inexhaustible generosities with contempt and hubris, that hubris and contempt are not only corrupting, destroying our collective life-support systems. They are also corrupting, destroying our cells, our tissues, our organs. Human beings have been in biological decline for some time now. Almost everyone is physically or mentally ill, malnourished or in chronic anxiety or pain. This decline  renders us ever more dependent on the very substances that have caused it: fabricated chemicals.

Of course these chemicals have come from Nature. We have extracted, isolated, compounded molecules and elements from her inexhaustible generosity.  Yet in becoming dependent on them for our ever-less nutritious food supply,  symptom-low  counterfeit health, transportation addiction, compensatory consumption compulsion and industrial production, we have corrupted our own bodies just as much as we have the natural world.

You are Nature. Your body provides you with your most intimate experience of Nature. It is a part of her incomparable ingenuity.  Your digestive system is transforming the natural world into your cells. Your respiratory system is transforming the natural world into your ability to think, act, feel. You are not a machine. You are a walking, talking, laughing, crying eco-system, nestled within ecological fractals that constitute the body and generosity of Nature.  A body that extends from beyond this Galaxy, to the teeming mini-universe of each one of your cells. You are a part of Nature, and totally, inescapably dependent on the whole.

Polluting our own bodies as we pollute the environment, we are destroying them both, with a speed and commitment that will soon enough be brought, painfully, to an end.

You can not be healthy if you deny your place in the natural world. You will not be healthy if you rely on fabricated compounds to maintain an impression of health. A healthy organism depends upon a healthy environment. To destroy your environment is to destroy your self. If you want to be healthy, take care of Nature. Choose with care what you put into your own body. Choose equally carefully anything that you will discard into her generous, unsentimental body.

Sad and true. Sometimes in our ignorance, complacency, decadence...there are warning signs. (That are probably easier to feel without all the inflammation and painkillers) But after the euphoria and greed phases of the good times, things take a turn for the worse. Then, denial sets in, followed by anger - as it it can no longer be denied -deflecting the responsibility. Then serious depression...

I guess we're heading for rock bottom.
