What Happened
In January of this year, Godfrey Devereux, yoga teacher, writer, and guide to so many, suffered two strokes in quick succession. The second, on January 9th, left him with significant right-sided paralysis and impaired speech.
After six and a half weeks in NHS care in the UK, he returned home to Wales, where his wife Karen, Olivia, and her partner Daniel provided round-the-clock care and support. Despite everyone's dedication, it became increasingly clear that Godfrey needed access to intensive specialist rehabilitation if he was to have the best possible chance of recovery.
Where We Are Now
Thanks to Karen’s commitment, Godfrey was able to begin the first two months of intensive rehabilitation in Spain at the end of May.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of this community, we are now close to being able to fund a further month of rehabilitation, allowing Godfrey to continue receiving the specialist care he urgently needs during this crucial early period.
He has now been there for almost three weeks.
Each day he participates in a demanding schedule focused on walking, movement, and the gradual recovery of his right arm and hand, while also receiving support for the pain and fatigue that continue to accompany his recovery.
The work is immense. When the stroke occurred, part of the tissue in Godfrey's brain died, and he is now having to relearn many things from the beginning. Progress can feel very slow, but it is happening. His speech continues to improve little by little, and further focused speech rehabilitation is planned in the coming weeks.
The rehabilitation team remain positive about the potential for continued recovery, particularly during these important early months.
The Support Still Needed
While we are deeply grateful for everything that has been raised so far, the costs of specialist rehabilitation remain substantial.
The clinic fees are approximately €33,000 per month, and current medical advice suggests that the longer Godfrey is able to remain in this intensive rehabilitation programme, the greater his opportunity for meaningful recovery.
Thanks to the generosity of so many people, we are now close to funding another full month of rehabilitation. This support is making a direct and tangible difference, allowing Godfrey to continue receiving the intensive care that is so crucial at this stage.
We continue to raise funds so that rehabilitation can continue for as long as it is clinically beneficial.
