What Happened
In January of this year, Godfrey Devereux, yoga teacher, writer, and guide to so many, suffered two strokes in quick succession. The second, on January 9th, left him with significant right-sided paralysis and impaired speech.
He spent six and a half weeks in NHS care in the UK, where he began to show early signs of recovery, before returning home to Wales, where his wife Karen, Olivia, and her partner Daniel have been providing round-the-clock care.
Despite their devoted efforts, continuing hospital rehabilitation exercises, consulting physicians and physiotherapists remotely, and arranging additional treatments, Godfrey's progress has unfortunately plateaued and, in some areas, regressed.
The Rehabilitation Needed Now
After consulting leading stroke rehabilitation specialists, it is now clear that he urgently needs a sustained period of intensive, specialist care to give him the best possible chance of meaningful recovery and, one day, returning to the teaching and practice that have both defined his life and touched so many of us so deeply.
The cost of this care is substantial. Karen is contributing the maximum available to her, and with the help of two of our community, we have been able to secure Godfrey's place in a specialist clinic in Madrid from May 28th.
But significantly more financial support is needed. The Specialist clinic fees are 33,000 Euros per month, with the expectation that Godfrey will need three to four months in the clinic to enable a sustained long-term recovery, and any chance of a return to teaching.
How You Can Help
If Godfrey’s work, teaching, or presence has touched your life in any way, a contribution now, however large or small, whether one-time or monthly, would make a profound difference.
We had a community call on Sunday 24th May at 18:00 BST / 19:00 CET to share a little more.
If you'd like to see the recording, send us an email (below).
We will also continue to share regular updates on Godfrey’s progress and how the funds are being used, so we can stay connected and see the difference we are making together.
In the meantime, if you are able to make a contribution, please do so below.
Also feel free to reach out directly with any questions or suggestions at: [email protected]
With deep gratitude,
Karen, Olivia, and Daniel
